Second (first octavo) edition, revised and augmented, with Boswell's Advertisement to the Second Edition and his Additions to Dr. Johnson's Life not found in the first edition of 1791. Three octavo volumes (8 3/16 x 5 in; 208 x 125 mm). , xviii, xxii, xxiv-xxxix, , 603, [1, blank]; , 634; , 711, [1, blank] pp. With portrait frontispiece to volume one; folding Round Robin plate to volume two (opposite p. 450); and folding facsimile plate of Johnson autograph examples at rear of volume three.
Contemporary tree calf. With the armorial bookplates of John Curtis Haywood to the front pastedown endpapers. An occasional contemporary margin note or underlining. An occasional few spots of foxing. Stain to upper margin of pp. 515-552 in volume one. Volume one joints, spine head and tail near invisibly repaired. Volumes two and three expertly rebacked with original backstrip laid down. A very good copy.
