Limited to 460 numbered copies (of which 450 are for sale), signed by the artist. One of ten special copies (this copy being No. 5) containing an original watercolor drawing (on an inserted leaf between the half-title and the frontispiece), signed and dated at lower right: "Arthur Rackham/1935." Large quarto (10 5/16 x 6 3/4 inches; 262 x 195 mm.). [2, blank], 317, [1], [2, blank] pp. Twelve mounted color plates, with descriptive tissue guards, seventeen black and white plates, and eleven small black and white drawings in the text.
Specially bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (stamp-signed in gilt on the front turn-in) in full green morocco. Covers stamped in gilt with a diamond-shaped gilt rule and four cornerpieces after designs by Rackham, spine panelled and lettered in gilt in compartments, board edges and turn-ins ruled in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. "Cockerell" marbled endpapers. Original black and white pictorial endpapers bound in at front and back. Spine slightly faded, otherwise a fine copy. In the original cardboard slipcase with printed spine label with matching limitation number (lower edge of slipcase expertly and almost
invisibly replaced). Housed in a quarter morocco clamshell box.
The original drawing depicts a man in his pajamas, with his red slippers on, and a ghost-like skeleton coming up beside him giving him a fright, causing his hair to stand on end and causing him to drop his copy of Poe's Tales. The image itself measures just over 7 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches.
