First edition, first printing. Small quarto (7 7/8 x 6 1/4 inches; 201 x 158 mm.). 96 pp. Inserted color frontispiece and five inserted color plates. Black and white vignette on title-page and twenty-two full-page black and white illustrations in the text.
Original blue cloth with front cover lettered in gilt and dark brown and pictorially stamped in dark brown, all within a dark brown single rule border. Spine lettered in dark brown. Brown and white pictorial endpapers. Minor rubbing to corners and spine extremities, spine very slightly faded, two small stains (adhesions) at the lower edge of the front cover, and a small faint stain on the top edge near the spine. Previous owner's ink signature ("Audley") on front free endpaper. A very good copy in a very good example of the original blue dust jacket with color pictorial label on front panel and with advertisements on the rear panel for "The Peter Rabbit Books" listing twenty-two titles.
"There is no year on the title-page. The first printing can be identified by the absence of the word reprinted' which appears on the back of the title-page of the next printing" (Linder).
