First American edition. Signed by all four Beatles on the half-title: George Harrison (in blue ballpoint), Ringo Starr (in black ballpoint), Paul McCartney (in black ink), and John Lennon (in black marker). Laid in is an Autograph Note Signed (with initials) by Leslie Bricusse, on his letterhead: “‘The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics’ Signed by all four Beatles—John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr—and containing a note from Paul to me after he, Linda & their children stayed at ‘Villa Saint-Paul’ in France during the summer of 1980—together with the world’s only copy of ‘The Bricusse Marching Song’, found pinned in my bathroom cupboard.”
Affixed to the front pastedown are five slips of paper taped together containing an Autograph Note Signed from Paul McCartney to Leslie Bricusse containing the lyrics to an unpublished song (written in red felt-tip pen): “Dear Les, and Evie,/and Kids./Thanks for the use/of the house. It’s been/great and the sun/gods have worked/overtime. Love from/all of our family/and don’t forget the/BRICUSSE marching/[flourish]song, handed/down from foot to/mouth, over countless/generations./love PAUL & LIN/and KIDS (Mary/Stella/James)/WE ARE BRICUSSE/—WHAT MORE DO/WE NEED?/[double underline]/(Repeat endlessly.) We are Bricusse/what more do/we need?/etc../etc../etc..[Drawings of Paul, Linda, Mary, Stella, and James]/THE BRICUSSE marching SONG./[underline]/(anon.)/FROM TIME TO TIME/THEY TRIED TO NICK US./WHEN WE WERE DOWN,/THEY TRIED TO KICK US,/and CERTAINLY,/IF YOU PRICK US,/WE WILL BLEED. (or breed!)/OCCASIONALLY/SOMEONE MAY TRICK US,/BUT NO-ONES MANAGED/YET TO LICK US/FOR......(loud with feeling!).”
A friend and colleague of the Beatles, graphic designer Alan Aldridge compiled The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics by asking contemporary artists to illustrate the lyrics in any way they liked: “Help” is illustrated by Ronald Searle; “Fixing a Hole” by Tomi Ungerer; “Glass Onion” by Peter Max; “I’m So Tired” by David Hockney; and “Oh, Darling” by Ralph Steadman. “What I have tried to do is present a book [that] is as entertaining to the eye and the imagination as a Beatles album is to the ear” (Introduction). This compilation contains color photographs and artwork on every page, as well as quotes from the Beatles explaining the origins of the lyrics of certain songs and their thoughts on stardom.
