Set in the eighteenth-century, the heroine, Gilmory Anstruther, is an appealing independent woman, who stands her ground firmly against a variety of adversaries. Mystery surrounds her birth, but hints are dropped that her father is an aristocrat. Her romance with the local miller's son enrages her scheming grandfather, who produces his own suitor for her hand. This is no less than Bonnie Prince Charlie, whose campaign the old miser has secretly been funding in exchange for his granddaughter's royal marriage. The Young Pretender turns out, however, to be an impostor, a notorious highwayman who has cheated the old man out of his gold. Gilmory's father is revealed to be the Duke of Gilmory, and she and the miller's son are united after a dramatic deathbed scene in which her grandfather begs forgiveness.

Not in Sadleir or Wolff.
