Contemporary dark green vertical-grain cloth, front covers with the royal arms of Britain and Hanover stamped in blind, back covers with blind central cartouche, spines titled in gilt with large gilt ornaments either side, red sprinkled edges, from the Hanoverian royal library at Marienberg with pencilled shelf-mark on the inside front cover of vol. I. Half-titles. B3, vol. I, lightly soiled at foot (printer’s ink?), a fine set.

Rare first edition, in exceptional condition from the Hanoverian royal library at Marienberg, by the Yorkshire-born author of Thoughts on education (1806, new ed. 1819). She published three further novels: System and no system, or, The contrast (1815), Imitation (1817) and The carriage (1819). We locate only copies at the BL and the National Library of Scotland, OCLC otherwise locating only microfiche copies in libraries worldwide. Item #00393
