Extremely Scarce Series of Plates Depicting Dreams

Large folio (13 15/16 x 10 1/4 inches; 354 x 260 mm.). Six hand-colored lithographed plates, each with a vignette above the main image depicting the dream. All plates heightened with gum arabic. Plates lithographed by Delaporte.
The plates are captioned: Pl. 1. “Le Rève d’une grisette. The Maid’s Dream;” Pl. 2. “Rève d’un gastronome. The Dream of a Gastronome;” Pl. 3. “Rève d’une pensionnaire. The Dream of a Boarding School Miss;” Pl. 4. “Le Rève d’une dévote. The Dream of a Devotee;” Pl. 5. “Rève d’une vieillecoquette. The Dream of an Old Coquette;” and Pl. 6. “Rève d’u conscrit. The Dream of a Conscript.”
Bound together with twenty-four additional lithographed plates (six of which are hand-colored, two of which are double-page and folding), including plates by Cham (two), four by Grandville and E. Forest (four), one additional plate by Grandville and one additional plate by E. Forest, four by Charles Philipon (four), and others, some from La Caricature and some from La Silhouette Album.
Contemporary quarter red roan over marbled boards. Front cover lettered in gilt: Caricatures. Smooth spine decoratively tooled in gilt. Light rubbing to extremities, front board slightly faded. Some light foxing. Short tear (1/2 inch) in the lower gutter of Plate 5 of The Book of Dreams, four other plates with neatly repaired tears. An excellent copy, bound at the time of publication. We have been unable to locate any copies of this very unusual and extremely scarce series of plates by Bouchot. We have never seen plates from this period with visual depictions of dreams.
