First American edition, BAL first state. Octavo (8 3/4 x 5 1/2 in; 222 x 140 mm). 432, [2, blank] pp. Portrait (with facsimile autograph 1 7/16 inches wide). Black and white margin illustrations throughout. Title-page printed in red and black.

Original brown cloth decoratively stamped in black and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. Edges sprinkled brown. Original drab gray endpapers. Small stain on lower margin of p. 48, small crease to top corner of pp. 101/102, small stain to top margin of pp. 303-307, ink signature erased from front free endpaper. Otherwise an excellent copy. Chemised in a quarter dark brown morocco slipcase.

“In this book the author returns to his native Mississippi River of before the War with its background of a few wealthy slave holding families. The story revolves about the changing of infants in the cradle and a final uncovering of the act by the protagonist, Pudd’nhead Wilson, by means of fingerprinting” (Johnson).
