"One of the Most Generous Bibliographies Ever Printed…
The First Choice for a Collector Who Wants to Have Ashendene Press"
[ASHENDENE PRESS]. HORNBY, Charles Harry St.John. A Descriptive Bibliography of the Books Printed at the Ashendene Press, MDCCCXCV-MCMXXXV. Shelley House, Chelsea: Ashendene Press, 1935.
One of 390 numbered copies, signed by C. H. St. John Hornby. Folio (13 1/8 x 8 7/8 in; 333 x 230 mm). 172 pp. Printed in red and black, initials by Graily Hewitt, specimen pages from all the books bound in, numerous other illustrations.
Original binding by W.H. Smith (stamp-signed on rear turn-in) in full rust sheep with publisher's device stamped in gilt on front cover. Gilt-lettered spine. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Additional Errata slip laid in along with bound-in Errata. Minimal rubbing to extremities, otherwise a fine copy housed in a cockerell paper covered, felt-lined slipcase.
"This must have been one of the most generous bibliographies ever printed, providing examples set again line-for-line, and with many drawn initials, of most Ashendene books since the Press began. Horby's Foreword, marred only by his modesty, was at once recognized as a valuable essay. Large leaves were folded and mounted on guards. Illustrations, initials, watermarks, bindings, bibliographic description are amply given. This may well be the first choice for a collector who wants to have Ashendene Press represented…" (Franklin).
