ANTOINE [Francois]. Nouvel Abecedaire En Estampes, Suivi de Petits Contes Moraux. Paris et Limoges: Chez Martial Ardant Freres, 1839.

First edition. Oblong octavo (5 x 7 5/8 in; 128 x 193 mm). 96 pp. Hand-colored full-page woodcut frontispiece, hand-coloredvignette title-page and seven full-page hand-colored woodcut plates (including frontispiece). Twenty-six hand-colored woodcut headpieces. Ten pages as typefaces, one page as syllabaire.

Publisher's black cloth with printed strapwork and central vignette, near-invisibly rebacked. A few light stains, otherwise a fine copy of a scarce title.

OCLC/KVK records only one copy, at Bibliothéque National France, but it is not colored and lacks the vignette title-page.

A charming and attractive new alphabet book with prints, containing seven moral tales for infants and children, each illustrated with a colored plate, and each letter of the alphabet illustrated with an animal and brief description, from the publisher's Religious and Moral Library.

We know of one other work by Francois Antoine - Esquisses Parisiennes. Paris: Chez les Principaux Marchands d'Estampes, 1827.

The Plates:

1. L'Infant qui a desobéi.
2. L'Enfant Descret.
3. L'Envieuse.
4. La Petite Fille raisonnable.
5. L'Infant pédant.
6. L'Enfant Complaisant.
7 .Le Flatteur.
