Bound c. 1920 by Rivière & Son (stamp-signed) in full navy blue crushed morocco featuring rectilinear gilt double fillet borders and gilt corner-pieces with black rosettes enclosing central panel. Gilt rolled raised bands, gilt ornamented compartments. Gilt rolled edges. Board turn-ins reiterate cover design. Top edge gilt. A fine copy. Housed in a navy blue morocco-edged, marbled paper slipcase.
Poetry includes work by Geoffrey Chaucer, Edmund Spenser, John Donne, Jon Milton, Francis Quarles, John Dryden, John Bunyan, etc.
Illustrators include John Tenniel, George Du Maurier, J.W. North, Percival Skelton, J.D. Watson, etc.
Whilst best remembered as the illustrator of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass, Sir John Tenniel contibuted many other illustrations in the later nineteenth century.
