Sir Samuel Baker's Ismailïa

BAKER, Sir Samuel W. Ismailïa: A Narrative of the Expedition to Central Africa for the Suppression of the Slave Trade. Organized by Ismail, Khedive of Egypt. By Sir Samuel W. Baker.… With maps, portraits, and upward of fifty full-page illustrations by Zwecker and Durand. London: Macmillan and Co., 1874.

First edition. Two octavo volumes. vii, 448, [56, publisher's catalog]; viii, 588 pp. With fifty-one full page plates and two maps with colored outlines.

Publisher's green cloth with gilt panels, front panels enclosing a gilt depiction of a camel train, spines with gilt lettering and a gilt figure at the bottom of a bird within foliage, brown endpapers. Overall, an excellent copy of a book usually found in less-than-desirable condition.

The Khedive of Egypt gave Samuel Baker absolute power (to the point of inflicting death) to permanently abolish slavery within his domain and while most of the book concerns this mission there is much on local hunting as well.

A classic in its own right.

Price: $1,500.00
