Bound ca. 1900 by Riviére & Son (stamp-signed on verso of front end-paper) in full olive green morocco. "The work had been begun in 1812 and gave its author the greatest pleasure along with a large measure of worry and anxiety. It had been advertised in the Water Birds of 1816, but whether it was, as there advertised, put to press in May 1817, seems doubtful. Letters from Bewick in February and August 1818 show him exasperated and tormented by delays and difficulties in the publication, appealing to William Harvey to return designs entrusted to him, and begging Tipper & Fry to send supplies of paper."
