The three drawings measuring 2 1/4 x 2 1/8 inches; 58 x 53 mm. / 2 1/4 x 4 7/16 inches; 58 x 112 mm. / 2 1/4 x 5 3/8 inches; 58 x 139 mm. All signed H. Alken and window-mounted on card (9 3/8 x 6 1/4; 238 x 159 mm.).
Chemised in a fleece-lined quarter brown morocco over blue cloth clamshell case, smooth spine with blue morocco label lettered in gilt.
Provenance: purchased from Spencer, London, 15 July 1937. Bookplate of Joel Spitz on verso of each mount.
The tiny scenes of a street party, a family at dinner and the interior of a shop show excellent draftsmanship on the smallest of scales.
Alken's panorama Progress of Human Life was published by S. & J. Fuller in 1820 and contained thirty-five colored aquatint scenes. The scenes were miniature adaptations of the plates in National Field Sports. Item #03491
