With a Double Fore-Edge Painting Depicting Two Early Sailing Scenes

Sixteenmo (6 5/16 x 3 13/16 inches; 160 x 97 mm.). [2, blank], [iii-viii], [2], 5-288, [1, blank], [1, engraving and colophon] pp. Title-page with steel engraving by Stothard, and two steel-engraved plates.

Contemporary full maroon straight-grain morocco, covers decoratively bordered and tooled in blind, spine with four shallow raised bands, decoratively tooled in blind and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt board-edges and turn-ins, pale gray coated end-papers, all edges gilt. Near fine. Inscribed on verso of front free end-paper "Viscountess Galway/from her affectionate/Husband/Sept. 8th, 1832".

With a double fore-edge painting beneath the gilt showing two early sailing scenes.

James Ford (1779 - 1851) was an English antiquary. Ford was a collector and compiler on antiquarian subjects. His large collection for a new edition of Philip Morant's History of Essex is in the library of Trinity College, Oxford, and his manuscript collections for a history of bishops from the Revolution onwards were purchased by the British Museum. He was also a contributor to the Gentleman's Magazine and to Nichols's Illustrations of the Literary History of the Eighteenth Century vols. vi. and viii., and was the author of The Devout Communicant (1815), and A Century of Christian Prayers (Ipswich, 1819).
