Two miniature volumes (2 x 1 /2 inches; 51 x 37 mm.). 512 pp; 508, [1], [1, colophon], [1, blank], 1, limitation] pp. With two engraved frontispieces and numerous illustrations throughout the text, all by Sir John Tenniel.

Individually bound in 2005 (Alice) and 2013 (Looking-Glass) by Roland Meuter (stamp-signed on lower rear turn-ins). Full green morocco with elaborate inlaid and hand-painted designs. The Alice with on the front cover of the March Hare and on the rear cover Alice, both characters surrounded by playing cards. Smooth spine lettered in gilt and with a hand-painted design of the Alarm Clock, top and bottom edges gilt with a 'hammered' finish, the fore-edge plain gilt with a beautiful 'split' fore-edge painting by Susanne Smajic, hidden beneath the gilt of on the left hand side 'The Dodo' and on on the right-hand side 'Tweedledum'. The Looking Glass similarly bound with the Queen of Hearts on the front cover and on the rear cover The Cheshire Cat, both characters surrounded by playing cards. Smooth spine lettered in gilt and with a hand-painted design of three playing cards, top and bottom edges gilt with a 'hammered' finish, the fore-edge plain gilt with a beautiful 'split' fore-edge painting by Susanne Smajic, hidden beneath the gilt of on the left hand side 'The Dodo' and on on the right-hand side 'Tweedledee'. Both volumes housed in felt-lined full green morocco clamshell cases with marbled paper edges and black floral emblems on sides and lettered in gilt on spines.

Roland Meuter is a bookbinder in Weggis, Switzerland. His bindery is located at Höchistrasse 39. He has been producing fine, unusual and creative bindings since 1998.

Susanne Smajic was born in Munich in 1972. She studied at the Art School Burg Giebichenstein in Halle/Saale and then at the higher education institution of Munster. Since 2000 she has shown her work in several solo and group exhibitions. She has illustrated several children's books - we are unaware of any other fore-edge paintings that she has done. She now lives in Konstantz.
