"This edition of Ulysses has been published by The Folio Society on 16 June 2004 to mark the centenary of the day on which the action of the book is set. It is limited to 1760 copies, of which 1750 are for sale, bound in full goatskin leather blocked with a design by Jeff Clements. This is Copy No. 744".

Small quarto (9 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches; 235 x 165 mm.). xxii, 735, [1, blank] pp. Eighteen etchings in black, white, and gold by Mimo Paladino.

Full turquoise-blue goatskin, covers and spine decorated in gilt and black from a design by Jeff Clements, smooth spine decorated in black and lettered in gilt, gold end-papers, top edge gilt. A mint copy housed in the original, gold lined, dark blue buckram clamshell case blocked with James Joyce's signature on the front and lettered "Ulysses" in gilt on spine. Mint as issued together with the original prospectus and photographs in the original shipping carton.

The text used is the one as issued in the 1998 Folio Society edition (which takes the text of the 1926 second edition) set in Old Style with Pastonchi display. Paladino's etchings were first published in a limited edition of eighteen copies.

"Ulysses is by no means an easy or straightforward book; it is a challenging book… Reading a book such as Ulysses is not only a challenge, it is a unique face à face between writer and reader… The ultimate arbiter … must remain the reader, the listener, the beholder; not the academic or critic. I do not believe that literature can be taught. En revanche one can when the human appetite, open the human mind. If our cultures and civilizations are to be preserved and carried forward down through the ages, the creator must remain the master of his oeuvre, particularly beyond the grave. It is that timeless Joycean mastery that Paladino’s illustrations amplify with delicate expressiveness and resonance of sensibility. Though this breathtaking edition is long out of print, I was fortunate enough to track down a copy for our shared enjoyment. (Preface by Stephen Joyce, James's nephew).

One of the most important works of Modernist literature, it has been called "a demonstration and summation of the entire movement" (Maurice Beebe, Ulysses and the Age of Modernism. James Joyce Quarterly Vol. 10, no. I). "Before Joyce, no writer of fiction had so fore-grounded the process of thinking" (Declan Kiberd, Ulysses, Modernism's Most Sociable Masterpiece).

Ulysses chronicles the passage of Leopold Bloom through Dublin during an ordinary day, 16 June 1904 (the day of Joyce's first date with his future wife, Nora Barnacle). The title alludes to Odysseus (Latinized into Ulysses), the hero of Homer's Odyssey, and establishes a series of parallels between characters and events in Homer's poem and Joyce's novel (e.g., the correspondence of Leopold Bloom to Odysseus, Molly Bloom to Penelope, and Stephen Dedalus to Telemachus).

Ulysses is approximately 265,000 words in length and uses a lexicon of 30,030 words (including proper names, plurals and various verb tenses), divided into eighteen episodes. Since publication, the book attracted controversy and scrutiny, ranging from early obscenity trials to protracted textual "Joyce Wars." Ulysses' stream-of-consciousness technique, careful structuring, and experimental prose - full of puns, parodies, and allusions, as well as its rich characterizations and broad humor, made the book a highly regarded novel in the Modernist pantheon. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Ulysses first on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.

Mimmo Paladino (1948-) is an Italian sculptor, painter and printmaker. Great literature is the underlying thread that, over the years, has led him to illustrate the icons of world culture, such as Tristes Tropiques, Ulysses, the Homeric poems, Pinocchio and Don Quixote.
