A First Edition, First Issue “Vanity Fair” in a Superb Cosway-Style Binding

First edition, first issue. Octavo (7 7/8 x 5 inches; 200 x 127 mm.). [iii]-xvi, 624 pp. No half-title called for, bound without the advertisement for The Great Hoggarty Diamond. Forty engraved plates, including frontispiece and vignette title. Numerous woodcut illustrations in the text. Some light foxing to a few plates, otherwise fine.

Bound ca. 1960 by Bayntun-Rivière, Bath - stamp signed in gilt on front turn-in. A superb Cosway-style binding of full red crushed levant morocco over beveled boards, covers elaborately bordered in gilt with gilt floral corner-pieces. Front cover with a fine oval (3 x 2 1/8 inches; 76 x 50 mm.) hand-painted portrait miniature set under glass of the young Thackeray. Spine with five raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments. Decorative gilt-ruled board edges, elaborate gilt turn-ins, pink watered silk paste-downs and endleaves, all edges gilt. Housed in the original felt-lined red cloth slipcase.

First issue with the suppressed woodcut of the Marquis of Steyne on page 336, with "Mr. Pitt" for "Sir Pitt" on page 453, and the rustic heading on page one. First edition, first issue, in book form (the printed title reads “With Illustrations on Steel and Wood by the Author”; the imprint on the verso of the title does not contain the street address of the publishers; the dedication leaf is set in small type, with the last line measuring 2 3/16 inches; there are twenty lines of text on p. 29; p. 58, line 7 up from the bottom reads “Shiverly Square”; the last line on p. 101 reads “sang to Heaven”; p. 152, line 36 reads “kind heart”; p. 254, line 9 reads “shawl”; and p. 579, lines 7-8 reads “certain debts/and the insurance of his life”).
