Fifty Fine Hand Colored Etched Plates by Henry Alken
The Large Format Issue

ALKEN, Henry. Sporting Scrap Book by Henry Alken. London: Thomas M'Lean, 1824.

First edition, larger format. Oblong quarto (9 7/8 x 13 7/8 inches; 250 x 353 mm.). Printed title-page and fifty fine hand colored etched plates.

Early twentieth century three quarter dark green morocco over green cloth boards, ruled in gilt. Spine with five raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, green marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. The hinges and corners have been expertly repaired. Plates watermarked "J. Whatman 1824". Some very occasional light marginal soiling otherwise a near fine example.

A splendid series of colored plates, including twenty full-page sporting scenes. Among the subjects included are the following: Fishing Scenes; Hunting Scenes; Racing Scenes; Shooting Scenes; Fox Hounds; Hound & Fox; Racing, & Relay of Horses.

A fine copy of this charming example of the best of Alken's etched works. As the title suggests the images offer a spectacular sampling of images, sometimes more than one to a plate which include portraits of particular breeds of dogs, hunting scenes, racing, general equestrian scenes, fishing, shooting & dogs fighting. Most have a sporting element but also included are a number of general tableaux of country life: brick-making, a country fair, a turnpike gate etc.

"The plates in this scrapbook feature a wide variety of subjects. What might be considered non sequitur today made logical sense in Alken’s time: shooting, foxhunting, and riding were all connected as leisure pursuits of the landed classes. Alken was a leading illustrator of sporting topics in England during his lifetime, working in engravings as well as oils and watercolors. This Sporting Scrap Book (published in 1824 by Thomas McLean) features fifty plates that include complete scenes and image collages on many different country sports."
