Thomas O’Malley and Uncle Waldo
An Original Walt Disney Production Cel
On an Original Production Background from The Aristocats
DISNEY STUDIOS. Thomas O’Malley and Uncle Waldo. Original Walt Disney production cel on an original hand-painted production background from The Aristocats. [Burbank: Walt Disney Productions, 1970].
Original hand-inked and hand-painted production celluloid depicting Thomas O’Malley and Uncle Waldo, placed over an original hand-painted production background, prepared for Walt Disney’s animated feature The Aristocats (1970).
The wonderfully comic image shows O’Malley smiling broadly beside the inebriated Uncle Waldo, wearing his distinctive green top hat, against a beautifully atmospheric snow-covered nighttime setting.
Image size: 7 7/8 x 9 7/8 inches; 200 x 251 mm. Framed size: 12 3/4 x 14 1/2 inches; 324 x 368 mm. Matted, framed and glazed. Fine.
An especially desirable original production setup from one of Disney’s most beloved animated features, combining two original production elements: the character cel and the hand-painted production background. Original production backgrounds are considerably scarcer than production cels, as comparatively few backgrounds were required for each sequence and many cels could be photographed against a single background.
The Aristocats, released December 24, 1970, was the twentieth Walt Disney animated feature and the last animated feature project personally approved by Walt Disney before his death in 1966. Directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, it featured the voices of Phil Harris as Thomas O’Malley and Roddy Maude-Roxby as Uncle Waldo.
The present image captures one of the film’s memorable comic encounters, bringing together O’Malley and the decidedly worse-for-wear Uncle Waldo in a striking winter setting.
