Artists’ Edition. Limited to 750 numbered copies (this being no. 328). Together fifteen octavo volumes. Engraved and photogravure frontispieces, plates, and facsimiles, all on India paper mounted, including illustrations by Howard Pyle, Frank T. Merrill, H.M. Brock, and others.
Handsomely bound ca. 1920 in three-quarter brown crushed levant morocco gilt over pale brown marbled boards ruled in gilt. Spines richly gilt in compartments, top edge gilt, others uncut, marbled endpapers. An especially attractive and well-preserved set, the bindings supple and bright.
A refined large-paper issue of Holmes’s works, produced at the height of late nineteenth-century American bookmaking, combining fine printing, high-quality illustration, and limited-edition appeal. The inclusion of Morse’s authoritative Life and Letters - issued shortly after Holmes’s death - provides a comprehensive contemporary portrait of one of Boston’s most celebrated literary figures, physician, essayist, and member of the “Fireside Poets.”.
