Pre-Publication Issue

GREENE, Graham. Monsignor Quixote. London: The Bodley Head, [1982].

First edition, uncorrected proof copy.

Small octavo (7 7/8 x 5 1/8 inches; 201 x 132 mm.). 220 pp. Publisher's yellow wrappers lettered in black on front panel and spine. Near fine.

A pre-publication issue circulated to reviewers and editors, representing the text prior to final correction and typographic refinement. As with most Bodley Head proofs of the period, produced in relatively small numbers and rarely preserved in fine condition.

Monsignor Quixote stands among Greene’s later “entertainments,” a gently satirical and deeply humane reimagining of Don Quixote in post-Franco Spain, blending theological debate, political reflection, and the author’s characteristic moral ambiguity. The novel forms part of Greene’s late exploration of faith and doubt, echoing earlier works such as The Power and the Glory and The End of the Affair.
