A Child’s World in Color - Steinbeck’s The Red Pony
First Illustrated Edition - With Wesley Dennis Plates

STEINBECK, John. The Red Pony. With illustrations by Wesley Dennis. New York: The Viking Press, 1945.

First illustrated edition. Large octavo (9 5/16 x 6 1/2 inches; 237 x 165 mm.). [1–8], 9–131, [1] pp. Thirteen color illustrations, of which eight are full-page.

Publisher’s gray linen over boards, front cover with duplicate color plate from p. 103 pasted down, spine blocked in blue and lettered in gilt, color pictorial endpapers, all edges stained blue. A fine copy, housed in the slightly worn original pictorial card slipcase.

A beautifully produced illustrated edition of one of Steinbeck’s most beloved shorter works, first issued in this expanded and richly visual form.

Originally published in parts in the 1930s, The Red Pony was here gathered and presented as a unified narrative, accompanied by the evocative color illustrations of Wesley Dennis, whose sensitive depictions of ranch life and the natural world perfectly complement Steinbeck’s prose.

The volume is notable for its striking design: the onlaid color plate to the upper cover, the vividly illustrated endpapers, and the bold use of blue throughout create a harmonious and highly collectible production typical of Viking Press at its best during the period.
