Sherlock Holmes in a Gentleman’s Library Binding
The Complete Short Stories - Elegantly Bound by Bayntun of Bath

DOYLE, Arthur Conan, Sir. The Complete Sherlock Holmes Short Stories. His Adventures. Memoirs. Return. His Last Bow & The Case-Book. London: John Murray, 1963.

Eighteenth edition, printed on India paper. Octavo (7 3/16 x 4 5/8 inches; 182 x 118 mm.). xii, [1–2], 3–1336 pp.

Handsomely bound ca. 1963 by Bayntun of Bath in three-quarter red morocco over red cloth boards, covers ruled in blind. Spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments. Marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Spine very slightly faded, otherwise a near fine copy.

A compact and finely produced India paper edition containing the complete Sherlock Holmes short stories: Adventures, Memoirs, Return, His Last Bow, and The Case-Book - by Arthur Conan Doyle. The use of India paper allows the entire Holmes canon in short story form to be gathered into a single, remarkably portable volume without sacrificing readability.

This example is elevated by an elegant post-publication binding by Bayntun of Bath, among the most respected English binders of the twentieth century, known for combining traditional craftsmanship with tasteful restraint. The rich red morocco spine and harmonious cloth boards create a classic “gentleman’s library” aesthetic—durable, refined, and eminently usable.

While later in issue, such Bayntun-bound copies are prized not for bibliographical priority but for their presentation and longevity, offering a practical and attractive way to house the Holmes stories in a single volume.
