The Glass Family in Full - A Bright, Unfaded Copy
Salinger’s Most Beloved Companion Volume to Catcher
SALINGER, J.D. Franny and Zooey. Boston: Little, Brown and Company, [1961].
First edition. Octavo (8 x 5 3/8 inches; 203 x 137 mm.). [vi], [1–2], 3–201, [1, blank] pp.
Publisher’s original gray cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Faint offsetting to endpapers from old newspaper clippings, otherwise clean and well-preserved. In the original printed dust jacket, with green spine lettered in black - notably unfaded, the color remaining unusually rich and vibrant. A few tiny chips at spine extremities. A near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket.
A cornerstone of J. D. Salinger’s later work, Franny and Zooey brings together two interrelated stories first published in The New Yorker, further developing the intricate and introspective world of the Glass family. Moving decisively away from the outward social realism of The Catcher in the Rye, Salinger here embraces a more interior, philosophical mode, blending spiritual inquiry with sharply observed family dynamics.
The title character Franny Glass, in the throes of an existential and religious crisis, and her brother Zooey, by turns caustic and compassionate, form one of the most compelling sibling relationships in modern American fiction. The work’s exploration of Eastern philosophy, mysticism, and the search for authenticity resonated deeply with readers of the early 1960s and continues to do so.
Dust jackets for this title are notoriously prone to fading at the spine; copies retaining a bright, unfaded green spine are increasingly uncommon and command a premium in the market.
