A Fine Copy in Dust Jacket - From the Library of Ingle Barr
SHAW, George Bernard. Translations and Tomfooleries. London: Constable and Company Ltd., 1926.
First edition. Octavo (6 7/8 x 4 7/8 inches; 175 x 124 mm.). [2, blank], vi, 246, [2, advertisements] pp.
Publisher’s original light green cloth over boards, spine lettered in gilt, top edge trimmed, others uncut. With the armorial bookplate of noted collector Ingle Barr on the front paste-down. Original pale gray dust jacket printed in dark green, with only minimal darkening to the spine.
A fine copy in a near fine dust jacket. Chemised in a blue cloth folder, housed in a quarter blue morocco clamshell case, spine ruled and lettered in gilt.
A lively and characteristically unconventional collection by George Bernard Shaw, bringing together translations, adaptations, and satirical pieces that demonstrate his wit, linguistic playfulness, and irreverent engagement with literary tradition. As the title suggests, the volume moves freely between serious literary exercise and deliberate “tomfoolery,” showcasing Shaw’s range beyond the strictly dramatic.
Copies in the original dust jacket are increasingly scarce, particularly in such well-preserved condition. The presence of the armorial bookplate of Ingle Barr, a noted collector, adds a further layer of provenance and appeal.
